Then he straightened up, with a gallon of milk in his hand, put it on the shelf, picked up the old man, and closed the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I felt embarrassed to wake them up, so I thought I’d help out first.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Help?” I crossed my arms. “You’ve been sneaking into my house, cleaning my kitchen, buying food. What is this, Luke? What are you doing?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He swallowed hard. “I’m trying to fix things.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Fix things? You left us three years ago, walked out the door and didn’t look back… and now you break into my house at three in the morning?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m trying to fix things.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“I know.” Her voice broke. “I know I don’t deserve to be here, but I needed to do something. I needed you to know I’m trying.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Trying what?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He breathed in short gasps and, for the first time, I realized how different he looked: older, tired, with wrinkles around his eyes that he hadn’t had before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When I left,” he confessed, “I wasn’t just overwhelmed. I was unwell. Worse than you knew.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn’t say anything, I just waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My business was failing,” he continued. “The company I had invested everything in was falling apart, and I was drowning in debt.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I frowned. “Who is it?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“A friend. We met in group therapy.” She looked at her hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We don’t try to recreate what we used to be, because that version of us no longer exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But perhaps we can build something new, something more stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s not a fairy tale; it’s messy and complicated, and the scars are still there, along with the fears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there’s nothing wrong with trying, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don’t know what the future holds for us or if we will ever be a family again.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
