Forty-seven years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six foot two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

White.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shaved head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gray beard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chest like a steel barrel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hands scarred from engines, fights he never talked about, and the kind of work that leaves black grease under your nails no matter how hard you scrub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most people saw his leather vest first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the patches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the tattoos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They rarely looked long enough to see what we saw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man who never let a prospect eat alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man who fixed single mothers\u2019 cars for the price of coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man who carried dog treats in the same pocket where other men carried cigarettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luna was his Pit Bull.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blue-gray coat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

White chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One torn ear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honey-brown eyes that made tough men drop their voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She had been found six years earlier under an abandoned trailer outside Nampa, ribs showing, chain scar around her neck, growling at everyone except Caleb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He sat on the dirt ten feet away and said, \u201cI got time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It took her two hours to crawl to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After that, she followed him everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until the crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A logging truck lost its load on Highway 55 during a cold morning rain. Caleb hit gravel, went sideways, and slammed into the guardrail so hard his Harley split in two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He did not wake up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three weeks, the doctors said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe never.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the hospital had one rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we brought Luna to the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She sat in the grass outside Room 112 and stared through the glass at Caleb\u2019s still body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the nineteenth day, the monitor changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few beats higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right when Luna arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mara looked at the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
