She said I was never supposed to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman looked at the name on the grave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man she had come to mourn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man who had apparently taken a child from her family and buried the secret with himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho was your mother?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe worked in your house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman\u2019s eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old memory returned suddenly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A young maid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A baby hidden under a blanket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her father shouting in the hallway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her mother crying behind a locked door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman looked at the boy again, and the truth landed so hard she nearly fell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re not a stranger,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy\u2019s eyes lifted, terrified to hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She knelt in the grass, still holding the photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The boy didn\u2019t answer right away.
