He told me if I came near you, he would make sure you hated me forever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man\u2019s eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked down at the pastry in his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe prepared them for you every morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old woman nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven after you were gone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His face collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All the money, the suit, the perfect life suddenly looked useless beside the woman who had waited on a cold street with a tray of pastries and one old photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stepped closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me sooner?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She touched his cheek with shaking fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause I wanted you to remember me before you had to believe me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man closed his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, for the first time since he was a little boy, he let his mother hold his face and cry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The old woman looked at him with tears in her eyes.
