She doesn\u2019t know what she\u2019s doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the girl shook her head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time, she spoke louder than a whisper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe told me if I walked, you would send me away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man turned slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman\u2019s calm face finally cracked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The girl\u2019s lips trembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe said you only loved me because I was broken.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man looked like the words had emptied him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He dropped to his knees in front of his daughter, his suit soaking against the driveway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, baby,\u201d he whispered. \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The girl started crying harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe made me stay in the chair when you were home. She said if I told you, she would make sure you never came back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman stepped backward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guests from the neighboring house had stopped at the sidewalk. Someone was filming. No one spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man looked at the wheelchair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at the hose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at the woman he had trusted with his child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His hands were shaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The girl swallowed through her tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSince Mommy died.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man closed his eyes as if something inside him had just shattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he opened them and gently held out his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time, the girl took it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the woman who had tried to wash away the truth watched the child stand beside the father she had almost stolen forever.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The girl stood in the wet driveway, trembling so badly her knees almost gave out.
