He stepped out slowly, holding an umbrella, his expensive shoes landing in the dirty water beside the boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGive me the notebook,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boy hid it behind his back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The girl stood in front of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo,\u201d she said, her voice shaking. \u201cTell me who he is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her father looked at her, then at the boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first time in her life, he didn\u2019t look powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked trapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat woman tried to destroy our family,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boy\u2019s eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy mom didn\u2019t destroy anything. She waited for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The girl opened the notebook again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A folded letter fell onto the wet pavement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She picked it up before her father could stop her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His voice cracked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t read that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But she already had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first line broke her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf my son ever meets his sister, tell her I never wanted money. I only wanted him to know he was loved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The girl looked at the boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same trembling mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same small scar near the eyebrow, just like her father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her father whispered, \u201cI was protecting you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She looked at him through tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo. You were hiding him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boy\u2019s voice was barely louder than the rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIs she really my sister?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The girl knelt beside him and wrapped her coat around his shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first time, nobody pulled him away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first time, someone chose him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She looked at her father and said, \u201cYou lost one child tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she held the boy\u2019s shaking hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
