The man stared at the photograph until his hands began to shake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhere did you get this?\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy mom gave it to me,\u201d the girl said. \u201cBefore she died.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His breath caught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat was her name?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnna.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man closed his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For twelve years, he had believed Anna had left him and taken their baby far away. His family told him she wanted nothing from him. They told him to stop searching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now a bruised little girl was standing in front of him, barely able to stay upright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d he asked, his voice breaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLena.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man covered his mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was the name he and Anna had chosen together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nurse shifted behind the desk. \u201cSir, this is not appropriate\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He turned to her, his eyes wet and furious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a hospital. And you tried to throw out an injured child.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena clutched her stomach and cried out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His anger turned instantly into fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He lifted her gently into his arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe needs a doctor now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nurse finally moved, but he was already carrying Lena past the desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doctors rushed in. A trauma room opened. Voices blurred around them as Lena held tightly to his jacket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you really my dad?\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tears fell down his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI should have been,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her one open eye searched his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMom said you would come if you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pressed his forehead to her small hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hours later, Lena lay safe in a hospital bed while police stood outside the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man sat beside her, holding the old photograph in one hand and her tiny fingers in the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was half asleep when she whispered, \u201cDo I have to go back?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His face crumpled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he said. \u201cNever again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
