I gently took the white rose from her trembling hand. Then I placed it back where it belonged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Please don’t spend another day wondering what would have happened if you had been brave for five more seconds.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I made a mistake”.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Arnold swallowed hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What if she says no?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Then you’ll know.” I smiled. “But I don’t think I will.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked towards the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A silver-haired woman had just entered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was wearing a light blue dress and scanned the room until her eyes landed on Arnold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A smile instantly appeared on his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What if she says no?”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Arnold took a deep breath, trembling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, another one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, he approached her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Irene…”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

She laughed softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Hello, stranger.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He handed her the rose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’ve been wanting to ask you something since 1968.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Would you give me that dance that I was too afraid to ask you for back then?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a heartbeat that seemed to last forever, nobody said a word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Irene accepted the rose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I was starting to think you’d never ask me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The room erupted in soft applause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The music filled the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arnold held out his hand. Irene took it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His first step was a little clumsy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second one wasn’t much better either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time they gave the third one, the two of them were laughing so much that they didn’t care about anything anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I was starting to think you’d never ask me.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

I slid my hand into Cameron’s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Next time,” I whispered to him, “if you’re protecting someone’s hope… tell me that’s what you’re doing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I will do that”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And next time,” he said, squeezing my hand, “I’ll remember that yours comes first.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I rested my head on his shoulder as Arnold and Irene swayed under the soft lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You know…”, I whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That?”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Last night was truly perfect.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cameron saw Arnold accidentally step on Irene’s foot. She laughed and kissed him on the cheek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He smiled. “Almost.” Then he looked at me. “Now it is.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
