The damaged connectors were replaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two colonies violated the building’s updated rules, but Caroline’s former college agreed to accommodate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Henderson was not fired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I paid part of the cost of the sealing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He tried to refuse.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“Okay. You’re very wrong about cleaning.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That seems fair to me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I got serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“But you can’t just disappear into another adult’s apartment again.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I know”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And adults should never ask you to hide things from me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Mr. Henderson is not a bad person.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“I know. But that rule is still important.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And if you ever disappear like that again, the sanitation police will be the least of your problems.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things have changed since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not entirely.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

I keep cleaning too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crumbs are still bothering me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Elizabeth’s drawings are still in the refrigerator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their books no longer have to be perfectly aligned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now there’s a glass jar on his desk filled with stones, leaves, and a feather that I’m trying my hardest not to think about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Henderson’s apartment has also changed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Caroline University helped replace several facilities that were becoming outdated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A graduate student comes to visit him twice a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elizabeth goes every Saturday with my permission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I usually go too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Henderson teaches him about colony behavior, queens, workers, and how ants communicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, from time to time, he talks to Caroline’s former students about how she looked after her colonies while she was sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She didn’t need a clutter-free home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He needed a home where he would be allowed to leave traces of his presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Broken clay frogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dry leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, even crumbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Henderson learned that you can’t protect yourself from pain by isolating yourself from everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elizabeth learned that helping someone didn’t mean hiding things from me.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

And I learned something I wish I had understood much sooner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not all disorder is a sign that something has gone wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, it’s a sign that someone has been here<\/a> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That someone wanted something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that it mattered enough to leave it behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
