“She has suffered a severe allergic reaction.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I frowned.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“That?”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We think it was because of the mango sorbet they were selling near the beach.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He picked up a clipboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It had traces of cashew.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My mind started racing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Maya is allergic to cashews.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“I know”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The doctor nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He was carrying an epinephrine auto-injector.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“She always carries one in her bag.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Liam found it.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“He also remembered some of the safety instructions.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I opened my eyes wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Blue Cove Clinic”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The doctor smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Most people forget we exist. He didn’t. He knew bringing her here was much faster than going back to the resort.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I looked again at the frozen image of Liam carrying Maya.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“He saved her.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The doctor nodded once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He made exactly the right decision.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He hesitated for a moment before adding, “Five more minutes…”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn’t finish the sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tears blurred my vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few minutes later we arrived at the clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maya sat upright on a hospital bed, looking exhausted but managing a weak smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other side of the room, Liam stood silently by the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her clothes were still soaked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His hands were trembling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I approached him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stared intently at my face. I did the same to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I hugged him.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

With the same strength with which I had hugged my own daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m sorry”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He seemed confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Because?”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For a moment…” I swallowed. “I thought you were going to take her away from us.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He shook his head.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“I would have thought the same.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I burst out laughing through my tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Thank you. You saved my little girl.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He smiled awkwardly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Rebecca crossed the room and hugged her son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chris discreetly dried his eyes.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The next morning we went for another walk along the same beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sea seemed calm again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As if nothing had happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maya took my hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something I hadn’t done in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I squeezed it gently.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Neither of them let go of her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a few moments, he looked at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“But I also know why.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I felt tears stinging in my eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’ll probably never stop doing it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I don’t want you to do it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He rested his head on my shoulder for a moment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Then he looked towards the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think we should come back next summer.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’d love to”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we walked together, I glanced towards the Blue Cove clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The white building stood silently beside the rocks, almost hidden from the resort complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the guests probably didn’t even notice him.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

We had hardly noticed it either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s strange how the place that saved my daughter’s life had been there, in plain sight, all this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the same thing happened with the lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Letting your daughter grow up doesn’t mean worrying less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
