Dan had taken something that someone else had thrown away and had spent 11 weeks rebuilding it, with the salary he earned each month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because she had realized something I had been hiding for years.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

After school, I cycled home faster than I should have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dan was in the garage with his head tucked under the hood of Mom’s car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dan slowly placed the wrench on the floor.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

It was the same word he had said to me four years earlier, when I told him that he was not my father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only this time, his voice broke mid-sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Okay?”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Give me a moment, girl.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I turned around.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“Lily”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dan almost always called me “little one”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I looked again, my eyes were wet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She dried one with her wrist, leaving a grease stain next to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You don’t have to call me whatever you don’t want to.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I know”.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

“I mean it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither of them moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I asked him, “Do you want me to repeat it?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dan laughed, but his voice broke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I moved a little closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You told me to say it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the first time she remembered having done it before him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His arms encircled me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, for once, I didn’t wonder how long he would stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I already knew that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Years later, I couldn’t tell you who had the coolest car that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I still have the yellow bicycle.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Now the paint is chipped and they’ve replaced one of the whitewall tires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I still remember Dan running behind me with one hand on the saddle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I remember looking back and realizing that I had let go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For almost my entire childhood, I thought that letting go and leaving were the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My biological father taught me that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
