When he lowered his hands, he looked her straight in the eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s not that you were failing at school, Emma. I just didn’t listen to you when you needed help.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She started to cry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryan too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn’t take it out of that moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I needed to process what I had done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Emma told him that she didn’t want to stay at his house that weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It didn’t magically fix everything between Lauren and me. But something did change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryan attended meetings when he was invited. And he copied me on all school emails.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Trust was not restored because he apologized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had to rebuild it by doing boring, but well-done things, over and over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One afternoon, Emma came running in through the front door waving a piece of paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Mother!”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I prepared for the worst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What happened?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He handed it to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a reading log.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn’t perfect. Several words were crossed out. One answer was incorrect.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Mrs. Collins had written a note. Emma asked for help today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I read it again. “Did you ask me to?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emma shrugged. “I’m stuck.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“AND?”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I asked you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What did you think?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Queer”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I smiled. “Weirdo in a good way or a bad way?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He thought about it for a moment and then said, “Just weird.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

I put the paper in the refrigerator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Months later, it was still there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because the card was perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because it wasn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Emma’s first day of school, I thought the worst thing that could happen was that another woman had the word “MOM” written on her chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the teacher handed Lauren my daughter’s papers, and I thought someone was trying to replace me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not the shirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not even the forged signature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My daughter was having a hard time and, instead of feeling safe enough to say, “I can’t handle this,” she had learned to hide the evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We changed that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not overnight, nor perfectly, but we changed it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Being Emma’s mother had nothing to do with my name appearing in the correct box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn’t about who was wearing a t-shirt or who was next to him at school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea was to be the person I could go to with the unfinished form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bad grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The embarrassing question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The words I couldn’t read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was afraid he would disappoint me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I couldn’t make sure that Emma would never have difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
