A CNN<\/em> report<\/a> based on polling conducted by SSRS found that 57% of American adults held a favorable opinion of Barack<\/strong> nearly a decade after his presidency ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The survey was conducted from May 7 through May 31, 2026, among 2,480 adults nationwide<\/strong>, using online and telephone interviews. The full sample carried a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than asking people to evaluate Barack’s job performance as president, respondents were asked whether they had a favorable or unfavorable opinion of various political figures. Public perceptions of former presidents can shift considerably once they are no longer dealing with the daily pressures of governing, something a Newsweek<\/em> report<\/a> also explored. Barack’s post-presidential ratings have remained relatively positive in CNN’s<\/em> polling history. But numbers are only part of what has defined Barack’s years since Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The poll arrived during a milestone period for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago<\/strong>, bringing renewed attention to the city where Barack and Michelle built their life together long before the White House entered the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During remarks connected to the center, Barack reflected on America’s place in the world, describing the United States at its best as “an undeniable force for good.”<\/strong> He argued that countries become safer and more prosperous when America lives up to its ideals and encourages international cooperation rather than attempting to dominate others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Barack arrived at the Chicago law firm where Michelle worked in 1989, she was assigned to advise him. Barack later remembered how their relationship began<\/a> rather simply: “I asked her out. Michelle later pointed out that outsiders could see fewer photographs, fewer public dates and fewer constant updates \u2014 then treat those absences as proof that something must be wrong. “We don’t Instagram every minute of our lives. Still, some social media users remained skeptical. One Instagram commenter<\/a> bluntly wrote, “I doubt it,”<\/em> while another declared, “Then definitely divorce news is true.”<\/em> A third joked in the same Facebook discussion<\/a>, “They are not divorcing. They just choose to live 3,000 miles apart and don’t visit each other any more [sic]. So technically……”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One person even compared the Obamas’ relationship with another former first couple, sarcastically writing, “Nothing like Donald and Melania always holding hands and kissing \ud83d\ude05.”<\/em> The remarks showed how easily people judge high-profile marriages by visible affection \u2014 and how quickly fewer public displays can turn into something much larger online.
