A woman rejects her former lover’s invitation to meet him 53 years after they broke up. But when she comes across some of his old letters, she reconsiders her decision and visits him, only to find his house in ruins.
Beatriz Vera, 76, had always been a cheerful and vibrant woman. But three years after losing her soulmate, Eduardo, she was reduced to a helpless and dejected soul.
She and her husband had been happily married for 45 years, had two beautiful daughters and a beautiful home in a wonderful neighborhood.

But when he died, the cheerful woman was left alone and heartbroken. Beatriz’s daughters, Stephanie and Cassandra, were married and had settled abroad.
Her mother’s only companions in her later years were photo albums and memories of them as children. As a result, she would rummage through her storage room every night to find all the old albums and sit for hours looking through them.
One night, she was looking through one of her collections of family photos when she found a pile of envelopes buried in a corner under an old box. She shook them to get a better look when one of the envelopes fell to the floor, revealing a letter.

She took everything into the living room and put on her glasses to read them, but as soon as she opened the first one, her heart began to race.
“Hello Beatriz,
It’s Tomás. I’m so sorry. Look, I understand you’re upset with me, but give me a chance to explain. What you saw wasn’t real, believe me. I’ve only ever loved you, and I won’t look at anyone else the same way.
Meet me today at Café de La Rosa at 5:00 pm. I’m in your hometown. I’ll explain everything. I promise.
With love, Tomás . ”
No one could have predicted that the happy and always smiling Beatriz would also have a sad side, but it was so…

When she was 23, she was madly in love with Tomás Estrada, a young and attractive man. They met at university and fell in love, and he had even proposed to her.
She had said yes without hesitation, and their wedding was already planned. But then something happened one night that changed everything…
Beatriz was with her friends at a restaurant when she saw Tomás. Initially, she assumed she had mistaken him for someone else, but she knew it was him when she looked at him again.
I was about to approach him and give him a hug from behind when a beautiful brunette ran up to him and kissed him on the cheek. Then they held hands and walked together to a table.
Beatriz was shocked. “Seriously, Tomás? You’re cheating on me!” She sobbed as she stormed out of the restaurant that day, vowing never to see him again.
However, she left the man a farewell letter in which she told him that she was returning to her hometown and that everything was over between them.
Tomás wrote her numerous letters after receiving her final missive, begging her to give him a chance to explain himself, but she didn’t bother to read any of them.
Later, she married Eduardo after falling in love with him. She had even forgotten she had Tomás’s letters until one day a postman appeared at her door. “You have a letter, ma’am. Very elegant! Nobody sends letters these days!”

Beatriz wondered who would send her a letter, since her parents had died long ago and her husband was an orphan with no living relatives. She had opened the letter out of curiosity, only to discover that it was written by Tomás.
“Dear Beatriz,
It’s been a long time. It took me a long time to find you, but I did. I didn’t come to see you in person because I don’t want to cause any problems in your marriage. But I just want to see you, even if it’s just once.
You haven’t answered any of my letters all these years, but please give me a chance to explain. You’ll find my address inside the envelope. Please, Beatriz, find me. I hope you won’t refuse my request this time.
With love,
Tomás Estrada.”

That letter reached her about a year after Eduardo’s death, and Beatriz was still in mourning, so she threw it in the storeroom, just like the others he had sent later, without thinking of ever reading them.
However, as she reread one of her letters the night she was looking for the photo albums, she felt something. She felt a longing to be with someone or to be loved, and she turned to the next letter.

“Dear Beatriz,
This is the last letter I will write to you. I wrote to you many times and I really wanted to see you, but I suppose it won’t happen. So I’m writing this letter to explain why I said I didn’t deceive you.
One of my friends had asked me to pretend to be his sister’s boyfriend that day so the boys who were stalking her wouldn’t bother her. Beatriz, it was all a joke.
I wanted to tell you earlier, but you were at your grandparents’ house at the time, and when you returned, everything turned into a misunderstanding.
I have only ever loved you with all my heart, and I have never considered anyone else. I am still single, and I hope you will forgive me and come back to me. But if not, then I guess this is goodbye.
With love,
Tomás Estrada.”
Beatriz’s eyes filled with tears when she finished reading. Tomás had never been unfaithful to her. In truth, she had wanted to tell him everything, but she was too angry to think rationally.
She couldn’t help but feel sorry for the man who had honestly loved her all her life. She frantically searched through the letters to find the envelope with his address and decided to pay him a visit.
However, when he arrived there, all he found was an old, dilapidated house with a broken roof and peeling paint. He started asking the neighbors about him, but no one knew anything.

Dejected, she had almost left the neighborhood when her gaze fell upon a frail 95-year-old woman.
He had been staring at her ever since he arrived. He felt there was something she knew and wanted to tell him, so he decided to approach her. “Excuse me, do you know anything about Tomás Estrada?” he asked gently.
The older woman didn’t say a word and handed her a note that read: “Go to this address; he’ll be there. He left this place two years ago and never returned.” Beatriz realized the woman was mute, which explained her silence.
“Thank you!” she whispered to the woman before heading to the address. An hour later, her search for Tomás led her to a nursing home, where she quickly spotted him.
He sat motionless in a wheelchair in the outdoor courtyard, almost like a statue. His eyes, which had once been vibrant and bright, held an eerie, empty expression, and his face was etched with wrinkles.
Beatriz’s eyes filled with tears as she approached him. “Hello, Tomás. How are you? It’s me, Beatriz!”
The man slowly turned his wheelchair to face her, but didn’t say a word. She smiled at him, her eyes filled with tears, and took his hand in hers.
“I’m finally here, Tomás. I’m sorry I ignored you all these years. Please forgive me,” she whispered softly.
Suddenly a voice interrupted her. “There’s no point in trying, ma’am. I’m afraid he won’t recognize you.”
Beatriz turned around and saw a woman in her fifties standing there. It was Daniela, Tomás’s caregiver at the nursing home. She informed the older woman that the man had lost his memory due to a stroke and was unable to speak.

Beatriz’s heart sank when she heard that. Now that she had finally met Tomás after all these years, he was in such a state that he couldn’t even recognize her! But she decided she wouldn’t give up so easily.
She began visiting him often and telling him her stories. She told him how they met, and showed him the letters too, hoping he would remember something.
At first it didn’t help much, but once, when she went to meet him, he cried terribly after reading one of the letters.
She continued sobbing, and it was the first time she finally recognized Beatriz and called her by name! Even the nurses were astonished. It truly was a miracle!
The older woman took Tomás to her home that day, and now they live happily together. She is grateful she decided to read those letters that night.
What can we learn from this story?
Don’t jump to conclusions. Beatriz thought Tomás had deceived her without giving him a chance to explain himself.
What will be, will be. Tomás and Beatriz were destined to end up together, and that’s what happened in the end.
