My 5-year-old son always complained when he was with my new husband — When I asked him why, he whispered to me, “He said I’m a problem.”

Alice’s son had always been a happy child, but lately he’d been acting strangely whenever her new husband, Sam, came into the room. At first, she dismissed it as just a phase. But then, her son told her something about Sam that sent a chill down her spine.

Being a single mother was never part of the plan.

When I married my first husband, Daniel, I dreamed of building a life together and raising our son in a loving home.

But fate had other plans.

Jeremy was only a few weeks old when I woke up one morning and discovered that Daniel was gone.

At first I thought she’d gone out for a walk or a coffee. But then I noticed her closet was empty and her suitcase was missing.

His toothbrush wasn’t there either.

I panicked and immediately called his phone, but it went straight to voicemail.

So I called his best friend, Chris.

“Hey Chris, do you know anything about Daniel? He’s not home.”

Silence. Then a sigh.

“Alice, I… I think you should sit down before I tell you what’s going on.”

That’s when I learned the truth.

Daniel hadn’t just left me. He had run away to another country with another woman.

A woman he had been seeing behind my back for months.

I spent weeks in a daze after learning where my husband was. I was unable to eat, sleep, or function properly.

And the worst part was that she blamed me for everything. Wasn’t that enough? Did I do something wrong? Why did she leave us like this?

But when I finally mustered the courage to face the truth, I realized it had nothing to do with me. He was the selfish one. The one who betrayed our family.

And I refused to let his betrayal define me.

I threw myself into work soon, determined to give Jeremy the best life possible. My mother looked after Jeremy while I juggled my job.

Little by little, the pain faded, and I began to find happiness in the small moments. I found myself laughing at Jeremy’s giggles and adoring the way he called me “Mom.”

Over time, I realized we were okay.

Then I met Sam.

It was a busy afternoon at my favorite coffee shop. Jeremy was at daycare, and I had just finished a long morning at work.

I reached into my bag to pay, but realized my card wasn’t working.

“Oh, come on,” I murmured, trying again.

It still wasn’t working.

The cashier gave me a polite but tired look, and I felt a wave of embarrassment rise up my neck. Just as I was about to return the coffee, a deep voice spoke behind me.

“Let me pay you for it.”

I turned around and saw a tall man with warm brown eyes. He took out his card and tapped it on the reader.

“Oh, no, it’s not necessary…”

“Seriously, it’s fine,” she said with a charming smile. “It’s just a coffee.”

I hesitated before sighing. “Okay. But give me your number so I can give it back to you.”

He chuckled. “Deal.”

That’s how it all started. A simple act of kindness. A number exchanged. A text message here and there.

Over time, I learned that Sam was an insurance broker. He was two years older than me and didn’t mind that I had a young child.

I still remember the day I told him about Jeremy.

“Alice, it’s wonderful!” she exclaimed. “I love children.”

For the first time in years, I felt hope blossom within me. Perhaps, after all, love wasn’t out of the question.

We dated for a year before deciding to get married, and Sam was everything I could have ever wanted. He was thoughtful and patient and never made me feel like he was “too much.”

The best part was that Jeremy took to him instantly, laughing at his silly jokes and holding his hand every time we walked together.

That’s when I let my guard down for the first time in a LONG time. That’s when I believed we were finally a family.

But then… my life took an unexpected turn. Not in a million years had I ever imagined I would experience something like this.

It all started one day when my mother took me aside. She looked worried.

“Alice,” she began softly. “Don’t you see she’s always whining when she’s with Sam?”

I frowned. “What do you mean?”

“You just have to watch him. Every time Sam is around, Jeremy seems different.”

At first I didn’t think much of it; I thought my mother was just being overprotective. I’d always been wary of men after what Daniel did to me.

But that night I started to pay attention.

Jeremy was his usual cheerful self when it was just the two of us. He laughed, played, and chatted nonstop about his day at daycare. But as soon as Sam arrived, something changed.

Her shoulders would stiffen, her voice would lower, and sometimes she would start crying for no apparent reason.

That made me realize I needed to talk to Sam about it.

“Hey, can I ask you something?” I said to him that night.

She looked up from her phone. “Of course.”

“Have you noticed how Jeremy acts when he’s with you?”

“What do you mean?”

I hesitated. “He… he stays quiet. Sometimes he even cries.”

“Alice, I love that boy,” he said. “I treat him like he’s mine. Why would I…?”

“I know,” I interrupted, unsure if I had offended him. “It’s just… I don’t know.”

He took my hand and squeezed it. “Maybe he’s adjusting. It’s a big change for him, isn’t it? A new father figure. It’s a lot for a five-year-old.”

I nodded, wanting to believe him. He seemed so sincere. But deep down, something didn’t add up.

A few days later, I picked Jeremy up from daycare and on the way home we stopped for ice cream. He sat on the bench next to me, licking his cone.

“Look, my love,” I said softly. “Can I ask you something?”

She nodded as she enjoyed her ice cream.

“Why do you get angry when you’re with Sam?”

Her smile faded and she turned away.

“You can tell me anything, darling,” I said, turning him towards me. “I won’t get mad.”

“I overheard Dad on the phone…” She looked at me. “And he said I’m a problem.”

I couldn’t process that.

“Are you sure, darling?”

Jeremy shook his head.

“Yes. She said, ‘Little Jeremy is trouble.’ I didn’t hear the rest because I ran to my room.” She hesitated before asking quietly, “Mom, will he leave like my first dad?”

Tears welled up in her large brown eyes. She couldn’t bear it.

I held him in my arms, pushing his hair back. “Darling, no. I’ll never let anyone abandon you, you know?”

That night I confronted Sam.

As soon as Jeremy fell asleep, I stood in front of him. “Did you call Jeremy a ‘problem’?”

Sam looked up from the sofa. “What?”

“Jeremy heard you on the phone. He said you said he was a problem.”

For a split second, something flickered in his expression. Something dark.

But then, her face softened rapidly.

He laughed, shaking his head. “Alice, come on. She must have misunderstood. I was talking about a guy from work. His name is Jeremy. You know, we’ve been dealing with a mess of paperwork and I probably said something in frustration.”

I studied his face, searching for any sign of deception. “So, you weren’t talking about my son?”

“Of course not. I would never say something like that about him. I love that boy.”

I let out a shaky sigh, nodding. Maybe I was exaggerating. Maybe Jeremy really had misheard.

“I’ll talk to him in the morning,” Sam promised. “I’ll clear everything up.”

And he did.

The next morning, she sat Jeremy down and assured him it had all been a misunderstanding. My son nodded as Sam explained everything. I felt relieved to see Jeremy smile.

But when I told my mother, she frowned. “Have you ever been to his office? Do you know anyone he works with?”

“I know where he works,” I told him. “I have the address.”

“I didn’t ask you that,” he said. “Do you know anyone he actually works with? Do you know any of his colleagues?”

I opened my mouth to answer, but no words came out. The truth was, no. I had never been in his office nor had I met any of his colleagues.

“Alice, something’s not right,” Mom said. “You need to get it checked out.”

I sighed, shaking my head. “Mom, you’re being paranoid.”

“Could that be it?” she replied. “Or are you just ignoring the signs?”

The next morning, while I was preparing Jeremy’s lunch, my phone rang. It was my mother. Her voice was urgent.

“Alice, I checked,” he said. “That address he gave you? There’s no record of him working there. Nobody’s ever heard of him.”

A shiver ran down my spine.

“How do you know?” I asked, my voice trembling.

“Do you remember Mrs. Parker? She works there,” my mother replied. “She confirmed it to me, Alice. Sam doesn’t work there.”

At that moment, I was sure Sam was hiding something from me. And I had to find out what it was.

That night, I told Sam I had to visit my mother because she wasn’t feeling well. I told him I’d be staying there for a few days with Jeremy.

As expected, she didn’t mind. She told me we could stay there as long as my mother needed.

Once at my mother’s house, I locked the door and sank down on the sofa. I needed to know the truth.

Hiring a private investigator was not something I ever imagined doing, but desperation drove me to action.

I needed facts. I needed real, undeniable proof of who Sam was.

Three days later, I got my answer.

“It’s worse than you think,” the investigator said as he handed me a folder.

My hands trembled as I opened it. Inside were phone records, financial statements, and a detailed report on Sam’s past.

His whole life was a lie.

The office address he gave me? It was fake. There was no insurance company and no coworker named Jeremy.

The investigator had tapped Sam’s phone and uncovered everything. It turned out Sam had been talking to his mother that night, not a colleague.

The investigator told me they were con artists and that this was their game.

“He’s been planning to set you up at work,” the investigator continued. “Your job gives you access to financial accounts, right? He’s been setting things up so that if something goes wrong, you’ll be the one to take the blame. As soon as you’re arrested, he’ll have access to your assets, including your savings and your home.”

I grabbed the folder when I started to realize that Jeremy was a problem for Sam and his mother. If I went to jail, Sam would have to take care of him or put him in state custody.

He hadn’t just been scamming me. He’d been planning to completely erase me from the equation.

I took a deep breath, forcing myself to stay calm. “What do I do now?”

“Go to the police, Alice,” the investigator said firmly. “As soon as possible.”

I didn’t hesitate.

Based on the researcher’s findings, I went directly to the authorities. The evidence was overwhelming.

I discovered that Sam and his mother had a long history of scamming women. They had traveled from state to state using different identities.

But this time he went further by marrying me. And I suppose it was because I had something valuable.

Once I told the police everything I knew about Sam, they assured me they wouldn’t let him get away with it. They just needed a few days to make sure they had enough evidence to arrest him.

I wasn’t there when they took him away, but I heard he didn’t leave quietly. He shouted, denied everything, and claimed it was all a setup.

But the evidence spoke for itself.

I’ll never forget the look on his face when the police took him away in the courtroom. It was as if he was trying to tell me he’d be back.

But instead of feeling afraid, she straightened her back and smiled as she looked him in the eyes.

After the trial, I took Jeremy out for ice cream because he was the one who saved me from losing everything. If he hadn’t told me about Sam’s conversation with his mother, I wouldn’t be here writing this story.

I will always be grateful to fate for giving me such an intelligent boy as Jeremy.
