After medical tests revealed something unusual about his blood type, Harry returned home to confront his wife, Nancy, only to discover that the life they had built over the past 12 years was a lie. But would he let this revelation ruin his family?
Harry watched his sons laughing at something and smiled silently at them. Although they were twins, Josh had severe anemia, which they had only discovered after noticing strange symptoms for weeks. Luckily, his brother, Andrew, seemed perfectly healthy.
Their GP decided to run more tests and asked Harry to take blood samples in case they needed a transfusion. The three of them were now in his office at a children’s hospital, waiting to find out the results and their treatment plan.

Finally the door opened and the doctor entered without looking up. His entire concentration was focused on the papers in his hands, and Harry stood up nervously.
“Mr. Campbell, hello,” she greeted him with an excited voice and shook Harry’s hand.
“Hello, Dr. Dennison,” Harry added, gesturing for the boys to greet the doctor. “We’re hoping for an update on how to proceed.”
“Yes,” the doctor clicked his lip as he walked around them to his desk chair. “Actually, Mr. Dennison, I’d like to speak with you. Can the boys wait outside?”
Harry’s eyes widened, but he quickly recovered. “Sure,” he nodded. “Guys, give us a moment, please.”
The twins, who had been in a light mood despite being at the doctor’s office, became serious, but Josh grabbed Andrew by the arms and they went outside.
“Okay, go ahead, Doctor. I’m prepared for anything. Our family can survive this,” Harry breathed, sitting down in the chair across from Dr. Dennison and leaning closer to his desk. “What’s wrong with Josh? What do we do now?”
“Calm down, Mr. Campbell,” the doctor sighed and leaned back. “Right now, I’m not too worried about Josh. He has an iron deficiency, but we’ll start him on supplements, possibly intravenously. We normally test parents and other family members as a precaution. But I wanted to talk to you about something else.”

Harry touched his chest, relieved that the doctor wasn’t worried about his son. It had to mean his condition wasn’t so serious. “Very well. What’s wrong?”
Dr. Dennison pursed his lips. “Mr. Campbell, did you adopt those boys?”
“No,” Harry shook his head. “My wife and I got married while she was pregnant and in a hurry, actually.”
That answer only made the doctor sigh and close his eyes. “This is a bit delicate, but their blood type is incompatible with the boys’.”
“Well, that happens often. Doesn’t it? I mean, some parents can’t donate blood to their children because they’re a mix of two people,” Harry shrugged.
“No, sir. Yes, some biological fathers can’t donate. But what I mean is, you can’t donate because it’s impossible for you to be the biological father of those boys,” Dr. Dennison revealed slowly, but he spoke more quickly when he saw Harry’s face. “Blood type isn’t the definitive factor in paternity, but your twins are both blood type A. You and your wife are both blood type B.”
Harry opened and closed his mouth. “But that’s impossible,” he muttered, his hands trembling as he covered his mouth.
“I’m so sorry, sir. I saw these results a couple of days ago, so I took the liberty of also running a DNA test on your blood samples,” the doctor continued grimly, pushing some papers toward Harry. “I understand this is hard to hear. But there’s more.”

Harry looked at the doctor, uncovering his open mouth and taking the papers. “What else could there be?” he asked, puzzled. His eyes scanned many medical terms he couldn’t understand and then wandered further. But Harry turned back to the doctor after seeing something even more surprising.
The doctor looked sympathetic. “That’s not a mistake, Mr. Campbell,” he began. “Josh and Andrew are technically your half-brothers.”
Harry was stunned by the doctor’s revelations, but he was sure he’d have more questions. Nevertheless, he asked Dr. Dennison about Josh’s treatments and then left with the boys. He took them out for burgers because Josh needed a proper meal and wanted to spend some time with them.
They were good kids and had the best relationship in the world. They liked all the same things: baseball, movies, music, and much more. Josh loved quoting scenes from the movie “The Godfather” because it always made Harry laugh.
But the results didn’t lie. The twins she’d raised for the past 12 years—her babies, her world, and her future—weren’t hers. Worst of all, they were her father’s children, which meant… Nancy had been with him.
It didn’t make sense. She was already pregnant when he introduced her to his parents. Maybe he should ask Dr. Dennison to run more tests.

When the boys finished eating, he drove them home. Nancy hadn’t gone with them to the doctor’s appointment because she had to let in a contractor who was going to remodel their bathrooms. As he parked in the garage, Harry tried to think of the right questions to ask her about the blood test and DNA results.
He took a long time to get out of the vehicle, and when he heard his children shout, “Grandpa, it’s so good to see you!”
Harry turned red and clenched his fists so tightly that he didn’t realize the car keys had cut his skin until the pain became unbearable. The anger and grief he had suppressed during Dr. Dennison’s consultation surged through him like a tsunami.
But he couldn’t just barge into the house and confront his wife and father. The boys were there.
They were all gathered in the kitchen, and Harry forced a smile as he walked in. “What are you doing here, Dad?” he asked tensely.
Her father smiled. “You told me the contractor was coming today. I didn’t know you had a doctor’s appointment, but it’s a good thing I came because I think…”
“Boys, weren’t you going to Bobby’s for a video game sleepover?” Harry asked the twins, cutting in on their dad, who could chatter about anything if no one stopped him.
“Great! Let’s go!” said Andrew. They grabbed their controllers and ran off. Their friend was only a few houses away, and it was the perfect opportunity for Harry to comment on what Dr. Dennison had said.

“Harry, is something wrong? What happened to Josh?” his wife Nancy asked. She could see something was wrong in his expression.
Harry closed his eyes. “I know the truth, Nancy. Did you two sleep together?” he asked, not wanting to delay this conversation any longer.
Nancy’s jaw dropped to the floor and she immediately looked at Robert.
“It’s not what you think, son,” Robert interjected, shaking his head.
“What is it then? DNA doesn’t lie,” he asked, looking between the two… but neither of them could give him a complete answer.
Thirteen years earlier, in Las Vegas…
Nancy enjoyed the rhythm of the music as she moved across the dance floor toward the bar area. She and her friend were at a famous Las Vegas hotel, and the club was packed. It had been their dream since they met in their freshman year of college. After graduating, they started saving and finally took a weekend to spend in Sin City.
That was all they wanted, but Nancy needed another round of drinks. They weren’t drunk enough.
“Hey! Five shots of tequila, please. Can we get some more lemons?” she called to the bartender over the music and saw him nod. She turned to watch the bodies swirling on the dance floor, moving as she waited for her drinks when, suddenly, a whiff of expensive men’s cologne reached her nostrils.

To her left, Nancy saw a man with a head full of gray hair and a beard who smiled at her. “Hello, beautiful. Can I buy you a drink?”
She felt flattered by the attention. “I’m already buying something for my friends,” she replied, her cheeks flushed. The man must have been twice her age, but he was robust, charming, and had a self-assured expression that was very attractive. “You probably don’t want the boys bothering you, do you?”
It could have been the alcohol or the man’s cologne, but suddenly she didn’t want to go back to her friends. “It’s a girls’ trip, but we’re here looking for adventure. Anything can happen,” she replied, glancing up and down through her thick false eyelashes.
“I see. I’m Robert.”
“Nancy”.
When the waiter brought the shots, Nancy didn’t even notice. She was laughing, tossing her hair, and having a wonderful time. The handsome older man had pulled her close, one hand on her waist, and she nearly fainted in his arms.
“Would you like to continue this in my room?” he whispered in her ear.
She nodded, almost hypnotized, a tingle running through her. “Let me take these drinks to my girls and let them know,” Nancy replied, licking her lips and swallowing hard. The girls cheered when Nancy told them she was leaving with a man, and she followed him to the exit.

They didn’t even make it to their room, as the chemistry between them was sizzling in the elevator…
The next morning…
“Last night was wonderful,” Robert told Nancy, kissing her cheek slowly.
“Yes,” she agreed, feeling dizzy.
They had woken up, ordered breakfast, and talked for an hour before Robert said he had to leave. They shook hands as they walked toward the hotel’s taxi rank and said their goodbyes.
Nancy knew she wouldn’t see him again, and she was okay with that. Her night had been adventurous and passionate, exactly what a trip to Vegas should be. She quickly got into her own taxi, excited to tell her friends all about her night with the mysterious and sexy older man.
Three weeks later…
“This can’t be happening,” Nancy told her gynecologist. “Please tell me this is a joke.”
“Look, a home test can sometimes be wrong, but this one is real,” he told Nancy with a patient smile. “Blood tests don’t lie.”
“Oh, God.”

“So it wasn’t a planned pregnancy,” her gynecologist commented. “Would you like to discuss your options?”
“Abortion, you say?” Nancy asked, frowning.
“That, or give it up for adoption, or keep the baby. Whatever,” she agreed. “It’s your choice, anyway.”
“I’ve heard that abortions can be risky… What if something goes wrong and then I have trouble getting pregnant?” Nancy stammered.
“It’s very unlikely. Abortions are quite safe these days, but don’t make a decision based on that,” the doctor added, patting Nancy’s shoulder.
Nancy sighed and left the doctor’s office not knowing where to go or what to do.
That night…
“Damn,” Anna exclaimed, shaking her head and taking a drink. Nancy had made plans with her to go for drinks, which she obviously couldn’t do now.
“Yeah,” he clicked his lips.
“The father is that man from Las Vegas, isn’t he?” her friend continued.
“Himself”.

“Do you have any way of finding it?”
“No”.
“What are you going to do?”
“I don’t know,” Nancy replied, biting her lip. “I guess I’m going to have this baby.”
“Alone?”
“And, what do I know, I guess so.”
“You’re crazy,” her friend whispered, rubbing her forehead.
“Actually, no. I mean…”
“Hello, ladies”
A male voice interrupted their serious conversation.
Nancy and Anna saw two men who smiled shyly at them.
“My friend and I saw them looking too serious here, and we thought we should go over and cheer them up,” the same man continued.
Anna looked at Nancy to see if she was trying to scare the men away, but she was too friendly.

“Sure. We could use a little distraction,” Nancy told them.
“Fantastic. I’m Oliver, and this is Harry,” they introduced themselves, and Nancy and Anna did the same. They chatted for half an hour before Oliver asked Anna to dance and they left.
“I’ve noticed you don’t drink,” Harry declared, nervously rubbing his neck.
“Yes. I have a…” Nancy paused for a second. “An attack of heartburn. I’m not feeling quite right. I came for Anna, who needed a fun night out.”
“Oh, what a shame. You should be resting.”
“No, it’s okay. I needed to get out of the house too. Being alone with your thoughts isn’t always pleasant,” Nancy continued. “So, tell me about yourself. We let Oliver and Anna dominate the conversation.”
“Yes, we did. Well, I’m the manager of…”
They talked while Oliver and Anna remained on the dance floor for what seemed like hours. But finally, her friend approached and grabbed her arm. “Let’s go to the ladies’ room,” she insisted.
“Okay, I guess I have to go,” Nancy excused herself to Harry.
“Sleep with him,” Anna said as soon as they entered the bathroom.
“That?”.

“Do it with him tonight,” her friend continued, almost demanding. “You haven’t been pregnant that long. What happened in Vegas was only three weeks ago. Sleep with him. Say he got you pregnant and have the baby with him.”
“Are you crazy?” Nancy was about to scream, but she held it in.
“No, you’re crazy to think you have the means to be a single mother,” Anna continued. “Do it. He seems like a nice guy. Handsome. A little clumsy and overly solicitous, but it’ll be fine, you’ll see.”
“Anna, it wouldn’t be ethical to do that,” Nancy continued, horrified.
“Oh, it doesn’t matter. Men take advantage of women all the time,” her friend insisted. “I’m telling you, having this baby alone will be terrible. I have a friend from high school. She was the smartest in the class, except when she got pregnant and the man ran away. All her dreams, all her ambitions went out the door when she decided to have it.”
“Anna, I have a degree and a job. I can raise this baby. I’m not like that friend of yours,” Nancy sighed, exasperated. But deep down, Anna’s suggestion wasn’t such a terrible plan. Maybe it would be better to give her child a father than to face motherhood alone. “Okay. I’ll think about it.”
“Yes! You’ll see, I have a feeling you’re going to marry this one!” Anna smiled.

“Oh, shut up already,” Nancy shook her head again, and they went back outside.
Her friend and Oliver went back to the dance floor, and Nancy sat down with Harry. They talked a little longer, and all the while, she kept thinking about Anna’s words. At one point, she swore she wouldn’t do anything so low. Harry, meanwhile, continued talking while she had her internal debate. At some point, she had to make a decision and thought about her son asking about his father in the future, or not being able to date, or her career stagnating because single mothers didn’t have time. Anna’s story echoed in her head again, and finally, she dared.
“Would you like to leave?” Nancy asked, flashing him her most flirtatious smile to leave no doubt about her intentions. Harry was taken aback for a moment but quickly nodded. Anna gave him a thumbs-up as they walked away.
A few months later…
“They’re going to love you,” Harry said as they climbed the three steps of Harry’s parents’ house.
“Oh, God. They’re going to be angry and scandalized,” said Nancy, rubbing her belly, which was finally showing.
“No, they’re going to be grandparents. They’ll be thrilled,” her fiancé insisted, and they rang the doorbell.
“Harry!” a booming voice greeted them, opening his arms wide. But Nancy didn’t see the man’s face first. She smelled something… that intoxicating perfume that had gotten her into trouble.

“Dad, this is my fiancée,” said Harry as he turned away from his father only to reveal… Robert.
They stared at each other for a second that felt like a lifetime, and the older man looked down at his arm across his stomach. He began to cough.
“Fiancée?” Robert finally asked after recovering.
“I know it’s a surprise. But as you can see, there’s another surprise in store,” Harry continued, pulling Nancy along as they entered the house.
Harry’s mother, Miriam, was delighted and pulled Nancy close for a hug, aware of her growing belly. They sat down and explained the situation further, including how they had met, how they found out about the pregnancy, and their plans to get married as soon as possible.
Nancy simply went along with it, unsure what to say. She tried to remain calm but could feel Robert’s intense gaze, though she intentionally avoided his eyes.
“Harry, come help me find the baby album. Nancy should see your baby pictures. Your son will be beautiful,” Miriam said, and Harry smiled.
“Actually, Mom. We just found out we’re having twins. Boys.”

“AAAH!” exclaimed Miriam, hugging her son and future daughter-in-law tightly. She and Harry then left to find the baby album, leaving Nancy and Robert alone.
Nancy’s eyes darted around, trying to find something to talk about, but he cleared his throat. “Nancy, are you…?”
“No. They’re Harry’s,” Nancy interrupted, pointing. “I had no idea he was your son. Hell, I didn’t know you were married. But these babies are his, and we’re not going to argue about it anymore. Let’s just do what they say: ‘What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.'”
“Okay. We have a pact of silence,” he agreed, and Nancy felt relieved.
Present…
“Tell me, Dad!” Harry continued. “How could our pediatrician of many years have to tell me that MY CHILDREN aren’t mine? But even worse, they’re my siblings! How could this have happened?”
“Stop whining,” the older man insisted, moving closer, which only made Harry angrier.
“Don’t touch her,” she warned, her eyes blazing. “What happened? Because it’s clear you’ve deceived Mom. But how did it happen? When did you meet? Why did you lie to me?”
“It was in Las Vegas,” revealed Robert, defeated.
“Las Vegas,” Harry whispered to Nancy. “The trip you took with Anna and your friends a few weeks before you met me and we slept together.”
Nancy couldn’t speak, but she nodded.

“Did you know you were already pregnant?” Harry continued, his voice still low.
“Yes,” she confessed, lowering her head. “I’m so sorry, Harry. I didn’t mean to. It’s just… I didn’t know what else to do.”
Harry pulled at his hair, flustered. “You tricked me with a pregnancy, but not even with my own babies.”
“I’m sorry,” Nancy lamented a little more.
“Son, I’m sorry too,” Robert added. “Although, in my defense, she told me they were yours.”
“You idiot!” she stopped complaining and started yelling at her father-in-law. “You knew it! You can’t blame it all on me!”
They started arguing, and suddenly Harry had a flashback to a time when they weren’t so angry. They used to laugh at picnics, they always teamed up for board game nights, and Nancy always said she liked Robert’s cologne. Now he was speechless, thinking about the signs he should have seen, especially after their mother died when the children were five.
The children… his children… who had brown eyes like their father, although Harry and Nancy had blue eyes. He didn’t question it at the time, but he should have.
“Whatever you want, Nancy! Whether I knew or not, it doesn’t matter. We need to plan what to do now,” she recorded her father’s voice again.
“Nothing! We won’t do anything. They’ll never know you’re their real father!” Nancy shouted, and Harry rubbed his neck, deep in thought. But they were interrupted.

“Grandpa is our dad?” Josh asked. Everyone turned in horror toward the door, where the two twins and their friend Bobby were standing.
“Dad?” Andrew turned to Harry, who tried to smile but couldn’t. The poker face he’d kept after the meeting with Dr. Dennison somehow just wouldn’t come, and his sons saw the truth in his eyes.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered to the twins, with no more energy for anything else.
What can we learn from this story?
The truth always comes out eventually. Nancy should have been honest with everyone from the beginning to save them all a mountain of heartache years later.
Lying to someone for your own benefit is always wrong. Nancy’s situation was difficult, but she shouldn’t have gone along with Anna’s plan or continued lying, even in her desperation.
