PART 2: «The Table She Couldn’t Return To»

The restaurant fell into a silence she could feel on her skin.

The woman stood near the entrance, clutch in hand, suddenly aware of every guest watching her.

She tried to laugh.

It came out thin.

“You own this place?”

The man slowly closed the menu.

“Yes.”

Her face flushed.

“Why would you let me think—”

“I didn’t let you think anything,” he said gently. “I told you the truth. I said it was expensive.”

She looked toward the manager, then back at him, searching for a way to turn the moment into something smaller.

“I was embarrassed,” she whispered.

The man nodded.

“So was I.”

That hurt her more than if he had shouted.

He stood now, his loosened tie making him look less like an owner and more like a tired man who had hoped to be seen without his title.

“I wanted one dinner where someone liked me before they knew what I had.”

The woman’s lips parted, but no apology came fast enough.

He looked past her to the waiter she had ignored all evening.

“Please make sure everyone on staff is compensated for tonight.”

Then he looked back at her.

“And bring the bill to me.”

Relief flashed in her eyes.

But he wasn’t finished.

“I’ll pay for the food,” he said quietly. “You can pay for what you said.”

Her eyes filled.

“What does that mean?”

“It means tomorrow, every server here gets the evening off with pay. You’ll come back and serve dinner beside the people you looked down on.”

The restaurant stayed still.

The woman swallowed, pride shaking in her throat.

“And if I don’t?”

The man’s voice softened.

“Then you’ll leave knowing the price of dinner was never what made you poor.”
