PART 2: «The Father She Was Told Was Gone»

The man stared at the photograph until his hands began to shake.

“Where did you get this?” he whispered.

“My mom gave it to me,” the girl said. “Before she died.”

His breath caught.

“What was her name?”

“Anna.”

The man closed his eyes.

For twelve years, he had believed Anna had left him and taken their baby far away. His family told him she wanted nothing from him. They told him to stop searching.

Now a bruised little girl was standing in front of him, barely able to stay upright.

“What’s your name?” he asked, his voice breaking.

“Lena.”

The man covered his mouth.

That was the name he and Anna had chosen together.

The nurse shifted behind the desk. “Sir, this is not appropriate—”

He turned to her, his eyes wet and furious.

“This is a hospital. And you tried to throw out an injured child.”

Lena clutched her stomach and cried out.

His anger turned instantly into fear.

He lifted her gently into his arms.

“She needs a doctor now.”

The nurse finally moved, but he was already carrying Lena past the desk.

Doctors rushed in. A trauma room opened. Voices blurred around them as Lena held tightly to his jacket.

“Are you really my dad?” she whispered.

Tears fell down his face.

“I should have been,” he said. “I’m so sorry.”

Her one open eye searched his face.

“Mom said you would come if you knew.”

He pressed his forehead to her small hand.

“I know now.”

Hours later, Lena lay safe in a hospital bed while police stood outside the door.

The man sat beside her, holding the old photograph in one hand and her tiny fingers in the other.

She was half asleep when she whispered, “Do I have to go back?”

His face crumpled.

“No,” he said. “Never again.”

Under the cold hospital lights, the girl who had been told to leave finally had someone who refused to let go.
