For five years, Andy and Sarah had given up their guest bedroom, turning it into a storage room for her parents’ belongings. But when they discovered they were expecting a baby, they asked the older couple to move their things out, leading to unnecessary friction and a surprise reward.
Five years ago, my in-laws wanted to downsize their house. So they set out to find the perfect little house just for the two of them.
“We have too much space and too much stuff,” said my father-in-law, Greg.

So, naturally, they asked if they could store some of their things at our house for a while.
“They’re just the things we want to keep, honey,” Greg told my wife, Sarah.
We didn’t mind, and we had a guest room that we didn’t use.

“Sure, Dad,” my wife said. “The guest room is all yours temporarily.”
The key word here is temporarily.
But you know what? They never took their things. Instead, they kept bringing more.

For a while, Sarah and I used to joke about the guest room and how it had become a storage room in our own house. They had moved the bed into a corner, and the room was crammed full of boxes and old furniture.
“Where do we keep the vacuum cleaner?” Sarah asked me one day when we bought a new vacuum cleaner.
“Put it in the storage room,” I replied, provoking a fit of laughter from my wife.

But then we discovered something a little unexpected.
“I’m pregnant, Andy!” Sarah said, running into our bedroom with a pregnancy test.
We had both thought about having children for a long time, but we still wanted to do a lot of things and travel more. So it was a small, unexpected blessing.

Together, Sarah and I sat and talked about everything from our son’s name to the colors of the baby’s room, when it dawned on us.
“The storage room has to go,” my wife said, sitting on the bed. “We need that room for the baby. We have to tell him, Andy. I don’t want us trying to rearrange our lives just because my parents are hoarders.”

“Okay, I agree,” I said calmly.
Sarah was already a bundle of nerves.
“We’ve arranged to meet them for lunch on Sunday. Then we can talk to them about the baby and his things,” I said.
My wife nodded, smiled, and went back to her comfort zone.

“I just need us to make sure that we’re the priority here,” he said.
The next morning, Sarah sat down with her laptop and planned the baby’s room in its entirety.
“I know it’s too soon, Andy,” she said sheepishly, taking a sip of her tea. “But I’m excited, and I need to do something with my excitement.”

Then came Sunday lunch. I wasn’t quite sure how Sarah’s parents would take the news, because they seemed happy to leave their things at our house.
“We’re going to have a baby!” Sarah announced as we sat down in the cafeteria.
My in-laws stood up and began hugging and kissing us in congratulations. Eventually, when their enthusiasm had subsided somewhat, I decided it was time to address the issue.

“Mom, Dad,” I began, addressing them the way they had always wanted. “We need you to get your things out of the guest room as soon as possible, because we’re planning to turn it into the baby’s room.”
“Oh, of course,” replied my mother-in-law, Janet, with a dismissive wave of her hand. “We’ll get on with it soon.”
After that, she started looking at the menu, forgetting the conversation about her belongings.

Weeks passed, and “soon” seemed to be an undefined concept in their minds.
Sarah and I started to get more anxious because, aside from waiting for our baby, the only tangible thing we could do was organize the baby’s room.
But his parents did nothing but hinder him.

In the end, I had to stand my ground.
“Do it,” my wife encouraged me. “Get them to resolve this situation.”
The next day, I went to my in-laws’ house to get some soup for Sarah and tell them that it was enough.

“We need you to clear it out before the end of this month,” I told them firmly. “We have a lot to do before the baby arrives. And I don’t want Sarah to stress about this. No exceptions.”
My mother-in-law nodded slowly.
“Okay, Andy,” he said. “We’ll sort it out.”

Finally, Janet approached and began rummaging through her old things. As she searched inside the boxes, she suddenly let out a scream.
“My God! Look at this!” he shouted, pulling a moth-eaten fur coat out of one of the boxes.
“Really? Andy! Sarah! I can’t trust you with anything! You and your filthy house have ruined my favorite vintage piece.”

I couldn’t believe what was happening. Not only had he not thanked us for storing his belongings at our house, but now he was blaming us for the damage.
“Are you serious?” I snapped. “You left this here for five years, and now you’re blaming us?”
“Yes!” she shouted. “This coat is irreplaceable!”

I tried to remain as calm as possible.
“I think you’re exaggerating, Janet,” I said. “And anyway, if it was such a valuable coat, you should have taken better care of it instead of leaving it in a box all these years.”
The argument escalated, and she stormed out of the house. Sarah stood there, wide-eyed, clearly caught between her mother and me.

And then things got even more complicated.
The next day, we received a notification of a bill for $695.
“What? What on earth could you possibly buy for that amount?” Sarah asked me.
“It wasn’t me, love,” I replied. “It’s from your mother. It’s a receipt for a new fur coat.”

“It’s the middle of summer, Andy,” she said. “It’s ridiculous.”
If she wants to play like that, fine, I thought. Two can play this game better.
I sat down at my laptop and looked up the price of a storage unit the size of our guest room in the city where we lived.
The fee was $150 per month. So, calculating the cost of five years of storage, it came to $9,000.

Next, I created an invoice in Janet’s name. She was going to learn a lesson.
This is the bill for five years of storage at our home. We appreciate prompt payment. The money will go towards your grandchild’s daycare.
- Your son-in-law.
A week passed and there was no response.
Then one night, just as Sarah and I were sitting down to dinner, the doorbell rang. It was my father-in-law, Greg.

“I’m here for the rest of the things,” he said, completely avoiding eye contact.
He and Sarah collected the remaining boxes and furniture, and by the end of the afternoon, the guest room was finally empty.
“It’s about time,” Sarah said, sighing. “I’m glad the mess is gone.”

My wife and I spent the next few weeks painting and decorating the nursery, transforming the once cluttered space into a cozy haven for our soon-to-be-born baby. It was like a weight had been lifted from our shoulders.
But just when I thought the drama was over, another twist hit us.
“Did you know that Janet is trying to sell that moth-eaten fur coat online as a rare vintage item?” Sarah said one evening, checking her phone.

My wife only addressed her mother informally when she was irritated.
“He claims it’s an antique with ‘natural wear’ and is asking for $1,200!”
I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity.
“It’s unbelievable. First he blames us for the damage, then he buys a new one, and now this?” Sarah said.
“Or maybe he’s delusional,” I replied. “In any case, we’re done with that.”

One afternoon, I received a call from Greg.
“I’m so sorry about all this,” he began. “Janet has been very unwell lately, and I know about making you pay for her coat. I want to make things right. Can we meet?”
We met at our usual coffee shop, and Greg handed me an envelope. Inside was a check for $9,000.
“Consider it payment for storage,” he said, looking genuinely remorseful. “I know Janet would never accept it, but it’s the least I can do.”
Later that night, Sarah and I had taco night with Greg.

If you enjoyed this story, here’s another one.
My father-in-law demanded I pay $6,000 for his retirement trip, so my wife and I taught him a lesson.
A retired father-in-law’s invitation to a cruise turns into a $6,000 surprise. A budget trip, a fake breakdown, and a cheeky postcard teach lessons in financial wisdom and family respect, guiding the high-seas drama toward a harmonious resolution.
My father-in-law, George, recently retired and decided to celebrate in style. He invited the whole family, including my wife, Sarah, our children, and me, on a cruise. We were all thrilled, especially the children, who packed their bags a week in advance, brimming with excitement.

Let me paint you a picture: we’re a happy, middle-class family. We work hard, save for a rainy day, and occasionally splurge on family vacations. So this cruise invitation seemed like a stroke of luck, the perfect getaway to celebrate George’s retirement. The anticipation was building, and tomorrow was supposed to be the day we set sail on this fantastic adventure.
