My fiancé cheated on me, and I teamed up with his lover’s husband to get revenge – Story of the Day

I thought my life with Mark was perfect until I found a hotel reservation for two. In Spain, I met Daniel, whose wife was also hiding secrets. Together we plotted our revenge, but what happened next surprised us both.

I sat on the sofa, my gaze lost in the wedding magazines scattered across the coffee table. Last week, Mark and I had been talking about honeymoon destinations. Everything was supposed to be perfect. Supposed to. But then, something changed.

“Spain again?” I asked Mark when he casually mentioned his upcoming trip. “Didn’t you just get back?”

She shrugged, without looking me in the eye. “Work, babe. You know how it is.”

That night he left on his business trip and I stayed behind, bored out of my mind. I had already done everything I could to keep myself busy.

Before, during those trips, we used to talk on the phone five or six times a day. But the calls became shorter and less frequent. Lately, I’d just stare at my phone, hoping it would ring.

That afternoon, while cleaning out my inbox, I found the hotel reservation for two. At first, I laughed, thinking that maybe Mark had accidentally used our vacation plans when booking his hotel in Spain.

But my heart sank when I read the details. Champagne and strawberries. I was allergic to strawberries!

And what does that mean? He’s not alone in Spain. He’s with someone else. She might be eating those strawberries right now!

“No, this can’t be right,” I whispered, pacing back and forth, clutching my phone tightly.

The email felt like a burning ember in my hand. Deep down, I knew it. The pit in my stomach grew heavier. I picked up the phone and called Claire, my best friend.

“You need to breathe,” he told me, but his tone was anything but calm.

“I have to go to Spain, Claire. I have to see it for myself,” I said, my voice trembling.

“You hate flying,” he reminded me.

“Watching my life fall apart from here is worse,” I replied, and my fingers were already booking the next flight.

The flight to Spain was a nightmare from the start. My seat was cramped, the air was thick, and my mind kept racing with every possible scenario.

What if Mark really means it? What if he begs me to forgive him? Or worse, what if he doesn’t care at all?

I was staring out the window, trying to distract myself, when suddenly a cold splash hit my lap. I looked down and saw tomato juice soaking through my jeans. Perfect. Just what I needed.

“Oh my God, I’m so sorry!” The man next to me, his eyes wide and horrified, began fumbling with napkins. “I swear, I didn’t mean to… It’s just… I’m so clumsy.”

“It’s nothing,” I murmured, wiping the red stain.

Sure, these things happen. Was there anything else that could go wrong today?

“Let me make it up to you. How about I buy you a drink? I mean, unless you want to sit in awkward silence for the rest of the flight with juice all over your lap.”

I couldn’t help but laugh despite everything. “Sure, why not? A drink might save the day.”

“By the way, my name is Daniel,” he said, offering me his hand with a smile. “And I promise you, I usually do better with tomato juice.”

“I’m Rebecca. And don’t worry, it’s not the worst thing that’s happened to me today.”

“Oh, really? Well, now I’m curious.”

I sighed, taking a sip of my drink.

“I’m on my way to Spain to confront my fiancé. He’s probably… cheating on me.”

“Wow. That’s… tough.”

“Yes. I’ve found a hotel reservation for two. Champagne, dinner… you know, everything.”

“Oh,” Daniel shuddered, shaking his head. “And here I was thinking spilling juice on you was bad.”

“Honestly, it kind of fits with the day I’ve had.”

Daniel leaned back in his seat, swirling his drink. “Well, listen to this. I’m going to Spain to see my wife. Who, surprise, surprise, might also be cheating on me.”

I blinked, stunned for a second, before bursting into laughter. “You’re kidding, right?”

“I wish it were so. But it’s not. It’s like some kind of cosmic joke, isn’t it? Two betrayed souls trapped on the same flight.”

“What are the chances that we’ll sit next to each other?”

“Quite rare, I’d say,” Daniel replied, raising his glass of cola. “Because of bad luck and strange coincidences?”

I tapped my glass against hers. “And because it’s covered in tomato juice.”

By the time we landed, the tomato juice incident was a distant memory. We both had more important things on our minds. As we collected our luggage and headed for the exit, Daniel turned to me.

“So… where are you staying?”

“Here.” I opened the GPS on my phone.

“Me too”.

I laughed again, shaking my head. “Of course. So what now? Are we getting the same room?”

It turned out that’s exactly what happened. The hotel was overcrowded, and the exhausted receptionist apologized profusely, offering us a shared room.

I was too exhausted to argue, and frankly, I was too curious to know what would happen next. We sat in silence for a moment.

“Well, I guess it’s just another chapter in this strange story.”

Daniel smiled contentedly. “It seems fate wants us to be roommates.”

We agreed to share the space. What were the chances? Two strangers, both betrayed, trapped together in a foreign country. It was absurd. But so was everything else that day.

We settled into the room, giving each other space. It was an awkward situation. After a moment of silence, we decided to eat on the balcony.

I was eating my salad when something caught my eye. I froze, my fork dangling in mid-air. There, lying by the pool, was Mark. But he wasn’t alone.

I was swimming comfortably with a woman. And they seemed… close. Too close. Panicked, I quickly ducked behind the balcony railing.

“That’s him,” I whispered, shakily pointing at the couple. “That’s Mark… with her.”

I expected Daniel to say something, perhaps a word of comfort. Instead, I noticed him tensing up beside me. Without a word, he slumped down next to me on the balcony floor. He stared through the railing.

“That’s… my wife. Brenda.”

We were both crouched down, our faces inches apart, peering through the railing slats like two children spying on the neighbors. His wife. My fiancé. Together.

I turned to Daniel. “They’re deceiving us… among themselves.”

“This feels like a bad comedy.”

I raised my hand to shush her as we strained to hear her conversation. Brenda’s voice floated, calm and serene, as if she were talking about the weather.

She was telling Mark about her plan to divorce Daniel and live off the money she’d get from him. Mark, to my horror, was encouraging her, telling her how great it would be.

I chuckled. “Are you… rich?”

“Not rich enough for her.” He let out a bitter laugh.

We sat there for a moment, trying to process the madness of the situation. Then, Daniel’s face lit up with an idea.

“Why don’t we give them a taste of their own medicine?”

“What do you mean?”.

His sort of smile suggested that nothing good was going to happen.

“Let’s pretend we’re madly in love. Let’s make a scene. We know where they’re having dinner tonight. Let’s give them something to talk about.”

My brain struggled to keep up with the absurdity of the suggestion.

“That’s… ridiculous.”

“Exactly,” Daniel said. “It’s the perfect kind of ridiculous.”

It was childish, absurd, and completely out of character for me. But it was exactly what I needed.

For the next few hours, we were plotting. Surprisingly, Daniel had a keen sense of style. At one point, he looked at my outfit and complained.

“You dress like a 40-year-old grandmother,” he joked.

“What did you say?” I laughed. “I thought you liked this sophisticated, mature look.”

Then, out of nowhere, she pulled a stunning red dress out of her suitcase.

“I bought it for Brenda,” he said with a satisfied smile, holding it up. “But I’m sure it will look much better on you.”

I stared at the dress, then at him, and burst out laughing. Things were about to get very interesting.

That night we got out of the taxi and, for the first time in days, I felt… powerful. Daniel, dressed in an elegant suit, looked like he belonged on a magazine cover, and I…

Well, that red dress did things I never thought possible. I almost didn’t recognize myself.

“Are you ready?” Daniel asked, offering me his arm with a playful smile.

“As prepared as I’ll ever be,” I replied, putting my arm around his.

We walked into the restaurant as if we owned the place. As soon as we passed Mark and Brenda’s table, I felt their eyes on us.

Mark’s jaw dropped. Brenda froze, fork dangling in mid-air. I squeezed Daniel’s arm tighter, reminding myself not to laugh. It was perfect.

We stopped by their table. Daniel leaned toward them, his voice loud enough for them to hear.

“Shall we invite you to dinner with us? After all, it’s a small world.”

Mark and Brenda exchanged awkward glances before greeting us with a hesitant gesture. What followed was one of the most painfully delicious dinners I’ve ever had.

Brenda barely said a word. Mark looked like he’d rather be anywhere else, fidgeting in his seat. Daniel was in his element, flashing his charming smile.

“So, Mark, Brenda… how long have you been enjoying Spain?” he asked casually.

“A few days,” Mark murmured. “Just a… spontaneous trip.”

Daniel didn’t miss a thing. “Oh, spontaneous! I love it. We should try it sometime, shouldn’t we, darling?”

I smiled sweetly, noticing Mark’s puzzled expression. “Of course. Spontaneity is everything. Although I’m not sure we could top your escape.”

Mark’s face turned even redder and he glanced at Brenda, who was struggling to maintain her composure.

“We were actually about to leave,” Brenda said.

Then, the grand finale. Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He opened it slowly, revealing a stunning pair of diamond earrings.

“Brenda, I was thinking of giving them to you. But I think they’ll suit my dear friend much better.”

I couldn’t suppress my smile when Brenda’s expression turned into pure horror.

“You’ll never see a penny of my money,” Daniel added, his tone suddenly serious. “And as for the rest… well, I think we both know what to expect.”

Daniel looked at me and winked. “Shall we go, darling? We have a reservation at a much better place.”

We left the restaurant with our heads held high, arm in arm. It wasn’t the ending I’d expected when I boarded that plane to Spain, but in that moment I realized I’d finally left behind the life I thought I needed. And what I found was something far more valuable. I found myself.
