I thought a tiny tattoo would spice things up. My future mother-in-law said it would drive her son wild. But Jason saw it, froze like a stone… and left me at the altar.
I never considered myself lucky. But that night, when Jason knelt down in our favorite café and handed me a small velvet box, I felt as if life had finally decided to be kind to me.
“What do you say, Miss ‘plan your coffee for life’?” he joked with a wink.

“Yes,” I whispered, and the world faded away.
It was just him and me. My forever.
We were happy. Almost childlike in happiness. We planned the wedding, debated the colors of the napkins, and tasted five different cakes.

Everything seemed perfect… until Lori appeared like a thunderbolt in a clear sky. Just when everything seemed too perfect to be real.
“I don’t want you to get scared,” Jason said one afternoon, as he left work, avoiding eye contact. “But I’ve hired Lori. She’s… my ex.”
“Your ex?”

“Yes. We were together before you. And now she’s in a difficult situation. She needed a job. I couldn’t leave her hanging.”
I clenched my jaw.
“And… is there nothing left between you two?”
“No! Emma, come on. I love you. It’s just that… I’m not the kind of man who turns his back on someone he once cared about. You’re not jealous, are you?”

“Aren’t you jealous?”
That’s the most dangerous question in a relationship.
I tried to be mature. To stay calm. To not think about how Lori was confident, gorgeous, and constantly around Jason.
He became her shadow. He brought her coffee, made “nostalgic” jokes, and stayed late at the office.

When I sent him a message,
“When are you coming home?”
Jason began to respond,
“Lori and I are finalizing the budget. Don’t wait up for me.”

I started to feel like I was planning our wedding all by myself. I chose the dress with my best friend. I arranged the seating chart with my mom. And Jason… he was working with Lori.
“Should I cancel the wedding?” I asked my best friend one night.
“Or maybe you should take a breath and remember that you’re the one in the white dress next to Jason at the altar. Not Lori. Don’t be ridiculous.”

I sighed.
“Let’s go for coffee. Jason canceled his bachelor party, so I’d skip any big celebrations too.”
“Hey, coffee counts as fun,” he winked at me.
At that moment Linda, my very involved future mother-in-law, called.
“Surprise, darling!”

His voice sounded like a trumpet fanfare through the loudspeaker.
“I’ve planned a real bachelorette party for you! Dancing, cocktails, ice cream. All your friends are here!”
“Oh… I didn’t really think…”.
“Don’t be shy! It’s your night! You need to loosen up a bit before the big day.”

Before I could say “no,” he hung up.
I stared at the screen for a moment, uneasy. I seemed too excited. And, somehow, too prepared.
It was supposed to be my night.
But, deep down, I had the strange feeling that it wasn’t really about me.

After half an hour, I walked into a rooftop bar with a beach theme, neon lights, flamingo-shaped ice buckets, and a DJ wearing a pineapple t-shirt. Linda waved to me from the middle of the room.
“There she is! Tomorrow’s bride!”

Linda screamed louder than the music and then pulled me towards her to hug me with glitter.
“Linda… you didn’t have to go through all this,” I said, scanning the crowd.
Some of my friends seemed just as confused as I was.
“Honey, this is a once-in-a-lifetime night! You were going to have coffee with milk in leggings. That’s unacceptable behavior for a bride-to-be.”

He wasn’t wrong. His head was too preoccupied with the seating arrangements, the flower arrangements… and Lori.
Jason said he was working late. Again. He said he and Lori had to “close the Q3 budget,” and there wasn’t time for his bachelor party.
I sent him three text messages from the bathroom.
He did not respond.

Linda must have seen my face when I returned. She handed me a cocktail with a small umbrella inside.
“Honey, you’re not going to be very upset about work tonight, are you?”
“I don’t know. Jason has been… distant. I didn’t expect to spend my bachelorette party wondering if he’s sitting in an office with his ex.”

Linda sighed and put a hand on my shoulder.
“Listen, Lori has spark, sure. The kind of woman a man never forgets. But Jason isn’t going to marry Lori, is he? He chose you.”
I tried to smile.
“But men are simple creatures. Sometimes they need a little reminder. A spark. A surprise.”

I raised an eyebrow.
“What kind of surprise?”
“Something new. Something bold. Something… unforgettable.”
That’s when I noticed the little corner he’d set up near the bar: a tattoo stand. Real needles, real ink, and a very real, very bored-looking tattoo artist hunched over his sketchbook.

“Have you hired a tattoo artist?”
“Of course! Something for the girls to remember tonight. Most have hearts or little moons. But I’ve reserved a special one for you.”
She handed me a printed image: a white rose. Elegant. Understated. It seemed… familiar, but I couldn’t place it.

“He’ll love it. Trust me. Jason has a weakness for women with a little fire. A rose behind the ear? A white tattoo. That’s a mystery.”
“I don’t know. I’ve never thought about getting a tattoo.”
“When was the last time you did something unexpected? Something impulsive?”
“I guess never.”

“You don’t want a husband who can read you like a book. Learn to surprise him and he’ll be yours forever.”
I looked at the image again.
“Besides,” Linda added, “think of it as your ‘something new.’ It fits with the tradition: something old, something new, something borrowed, something inked!”

That made me laugh. And maybe the finished cocktail helped too.
So I did it.
I sat in the chair. I closed my eyes. I let the pain bloom on my skin like petals. A rose on my neck. Tiny, but permanent.

Linda clapped as if she had just witnessed a miracle.
“Oh, Emma. You seem like someone who knows exactly what she wants.”
I wasn’t sure if Jason would love it. I wasn’t even sure if I loved it.
I had that strange feeling in my gut, as if I had just done something that I wouldn’t be able to undo.

The wedding ceremony was held in a blooming garden with ivory curtains, fairy lights, and white petals scattered like snow.
The dress fit me like it was made for me. My hair curled perfectly. Even the breeze seemed rehearsed.

The guests were already seated, gently fanning themselves. I saw Mom drying her eyes and my best friend winking and saying “breathe.”
Then I saw it.
Jason stood by the altar in his navy suit, his tie slightly askew, just the way I liked it. He smiled when he saw me.

As I walked down the hallway, my heels clicking against the stone, the music blared. I smiled back. Maybe everything was going to be alright.
“You’re… wow,” Jason whispered when I reached him.
“Don’t cry,” I whispered to her, barely able to contain myself.
The officiant began. Something about love. Vows. Forever. I heard almost nothing. My eyes remained fixed on Jason’s.

Then, without thinking, I tucked a lock of hair behind my ear.
Jason’s face changed. His smile froze. His eyes traveled down to my ear, then widened. He blinked. Once. Twice.
“Emma… what is that?”
“That?”

“That. In your ear. Is this… some kind of joke?”
“It’s just a tattoo. A white rose. I thought you’d like it…”
His face twisted. He took a step back.
“What’s the matter?”

My heart skipped a beat.
“Jason, what are you talking about? It’s nothing…”
“Nothing? Are you serious?”
Her voice broke. People began to whisper.

“What did he say?”
“Is he angry about the tattoo?”
“She looks like she’s going to faint.”
“Do you think this is funny?” Jason snapped. “Do you think it’s some kind of twisted surprise?”
“Jason, no! I just…”

“I can’t… I can’t believe it.”
He turned around, stumbling past the officiant, past the astonished crowd. Murmurs erupted around him.
Is the groom leaving?
“Did he just leave?”
“Is it still part of the ceremony?”

I stood there, frozen, with trembling lips and a broken heart.
Then I turned around and saw them.
To Linda. And to Lori. Standing on the edge of the tent, as if they were watching a show.
Linda was smiling. Calm. Satisfied. And Lori? Lori tilted her head, pushed her hair back… and there she was.

The same rose. In the same place. The same size. The same ink.
My throat went dry. I approached without realizing it. Linda looked at me first and smiled with satisfaction.
“I told you I would get his attention.”
I pounced on them.
“You,” I said, stopping a few steps away from them. “What the hell have you done?”

Linda calmly grabbed my wrist.
“Honey, not here. Everyone’s watching.”
“I don’t care.”
She leaned towards me, all sweet.
“You wanted to be the center of attention, didn’t you? I told you that with this you would get it.”

“You planned it! You set me up.”
“Lower your voice, darling. Let’s go outside.”
“Speak. Now.”
Lori crossed her arms, smiling.
“Did you really not recognize the tattoo?”

“I’d never seen it until today!” I shouted.
“That’s the thing. But Jason did.”
I stared at her.
“Why did he recognize your tattoo?”

Linda came between us.
“Because, my dear, that rose was sacred to them. He thought she had made it for her lost baby. How tragic, isn’t it?”
I was frozen.
“Wait. Was he thinking?”

Lori snorted.
“There was no baby. Just a little drama to keep me in his heart.”
“Did you lie to him? About a child?”
“It worked. For years. And then you came along with your sweet smiles and your ‘simple girl’ charm, and he almost forgot about it.”

“So you tricked me into copying it. You used me.”
Lori moved a little closer, with a conceited voice.
“You gave her the best guilt-ridden memory of her life. Right before she said ‘I do.’ Honestly, you should thank us. Now you’ll be unforgettable too.”
I felt as if the ground had cracked beneath me. My stomach churned.

“They’re sick. Both of them.”
Linda smoothed down her pearl necklace and said, “I just didn’t want my son to marry someone… predictable.”
“Well, congratulations. You’ve achieved exactly what you wanted.”
“I have to find Jason.”
I turned to leave, my vision blurred, and then…

“Emma”.
I froze. I turned around.
Jason stood there, pale, breathless, his eyes fixed on Lori and Linda.
“I’ve heard it all. I came back because something didn’t add up. And now… now I see it.”

Lori took a step back. Linda straightened up, but her self-assurance was gone.
“I spent years crying over something that wasn’t even real,” Jason continued. “You made me believe I’d lost a child. And you—” He turned to Linda, his eyes filled with pain—”you used that lie to turn me against the only honest woman I’ve ever loved.”
I froze. Jason looked at me.
“And you… you didn’t know. You were just trying to surprise me. I love you.”

“I thought I had ruined everything.”
“You saved me from a lie I didn’t even know I was still living in.”
Linda looked around, realizing that all eyes were on her. Her pearls shifted as she swallowed.
“Emma,” she said, trembling, now louder, “I was wrong. I let jealousy cloud everything. I’m sorry. I really am.”
She tried to smile, but no one smiled back.

Jason didn’t take his eyes off me.
“Come on?”
I nodded. We went back together. The guests dispersed like water. My best friend was speechless. The music started again, soft and slow.
And that time, while the music played and he looked at me as if I were everything, we stayed where I had always been waiting for love.
