My brother’s latest scheme led me to a disastrous date with his friend Stewart, and we were stuck in a fancy restaurant with an unpaid bill. As the tension mounted and the manager threatened to call the police, I realized just how far Adam had gone, and I wondered how we would ever escape.
“Jess, you have to meet this guy,” Adam said, smiling as if he’d just discovered the secret to eternal youth. He was lying on my couch, flipping through channels.

“Who is this?” I asked, without looking up from my laptop.
“Stewart. He works with me. A very honest guy. Stable job, nice car, all that.”
I rolled my eyes. “Another one of your brilliant attempts to introduce me to someone?”
“No, seriously! It’s different. You’ll like it. Besides, he’s been asking about you.”
I sighed. Adam’s track record of trying to get me dates was terrible, but the way he talked about Stewart piqued my interest. “Okay. But if he turns out to be another flop, I won’t be listening to you again.”

Adam smiled contentedly. “Deal. You’ll thank me later.”
I spent the next few hours meticulously preparing, determined to make a good impression despite my reservations. When I finished, my apartment looked like a war zone of makeup and clothes. I was on edge, but Adam’s encouragement kept me focused.
Stewart picked me up in a gleaming sedan that looked like it had just rolled off the showroom floor. As I slid into the passenger seat, I couldn’t help but notice the fresh leather scent and the subtle hum of the engine.

“Hi, Jess, right?”, he said with a smile that seemed genuinely warm.
“Yes, it’s me. Nice to meet you, Stewart.”
“Likewise. By the way, you look great.”
I blushed, feeling a little more at ease. “Thank you. Where are we going?”
“I thought I’d take you to a new place downtown. It’s luxurious, but the food is amazing.”
“Sounds good,” I replied, trying to hide my surprise. I wasn’t used to such luxurious outings.

The restaurant looked like something out of a movie, with a charming and understated decor that nonetheless exuded luxury. I felt out of place in my carefully chosen suit. However, Stewart seemed completely at ease. She chatted with the host and led me to our table.
“This place is amazing,” I said, looking around in amazement.
“Only the best,” he replied with a wink. “Order whatever you want.”
The menu opened my eyes. Everything was outrageously expensive, but Stewart dispelled my doubts. “Don’t worry, it’s on me.”

I smiled, grateful and flattered. Our conversation flowed effortlessly. Stewart was charming, funny, and intelligent. I laughed more than I had in weeks.
The evening was perfect until the bill arrived. Stewart handed over his card with a confident flourish, still in the middle of a joke. The waitress returned, looking uneasy.
“I’m sorry, sir, but your card has been declined.”
Stewart’s face fell with embarrassment. “No way. Try again.”

He did so. Twice more, with the same result. Stewart’s charm evaporated, replaced by a frown. “This is ridiculous. Do you even know how to use the machine?” he snapped.
Other diners started staring at us. I felt my face burn with embarrassment. “Stewart, there might be a problem with the card. Do you have another one?” I suggested, trying to defuse the situation.
She glanced at the waitress and then turned back to me. “I swear this never happens. Someone must have messed up.”

Stewart looked at me, embarrassed: “Are you carrying any money?” he asked.
I was surprised. “I already told you I couldn’t afford this place. I don’t have that much money.”
Stewart’s eyes flashed with anger. “Do you think I planned this? Please, pay the bill, Jess.”
I crossed my arms, standing firm. “No. I don’t have any money. It was your idea. And Adam’s, I should add. He said you had a good job and were doing well.”
The tension at the table was thick. I saw the waitress shifting uncomfortably, and the manager was standing next to her.
Stewart’s face twisted in frustration. “Unbelievable.”

I felt angry and humiliated. “I’m going to the bathroom,” I muttered, needing a moment to compose myself.
Inside, I leaned against the sink, taking a deep breath. My phone buzzed in my bag. A message from Adam: “How’s it going?”
I stared at the screen, debating whether to reply or not. How could I explain this disaster? I splashed water on my face and tried to calm my nerves. I had to go back out and face the music.

When I returned to the dining room, I saw Stewart still arguing with the waitress. The manager was involved, and the tension was palpable. I went back to the table, my heart pounding.
“Is everything alright now?” I asked, my voice firmer than I felt.
Stewart turned to me, his anger barely contained. “They say my card doesn’t work. Can you believe that?”
I swallowed. “Maybe we should leave.”
“What? Run away without paying the bill?” he muttered. “We can’t do that. Look at their security guard, he’ll definitely catch us. And this seems like the kind of place that’ll press charges to teach us a lesson.”
I shook my head. “Then we’re trapped.”

The manager intervened. “Sir, we need to resolve this. Do you have another payment method?”
Stewart looked at me, despair in his eyes. I shook my head firmly.
“I guess we’ll have to make do,” he muttered, his bravado completely vanished.
I couldn’t shake the feeling that the night was far from over, and not in a good way. Sure enough, Stewart started a heated argument with the restaurant’s security guard when he approached. Stewart’s face was flushed, and he raised his voice with every sentence.

“I told you there must be a problem with my card! Call my bank if necessary.”
“Sir, if you cannot pay, we will have to resort to the authorities,” the dark-skinned security guard warned sternly.
My heart sank. “Stewart, what are you going to do?”
She turned to me, despair in her eyes. “Jess, I didn’t expect this. Can you help me? Just this once?”
“No, I can’t. I’ve already told you I don’t have that much money,” I replied, feeling trapped and humiliated.
Out of the blue, my phone rang. A message from Adam: “How’s the date going, sis? ;)”

I felt a surge of anger. I showed the message to Stewart. “Did Adam know you couldn’t afford all this?”
Stewart seemed genuinely confused. “Well, I don’t know. He set us up. But…”

“So what about the car? How can you afford it? You need good credit to drive a car like that.”
He sighed, looking defeated. “Adam rented the car for me. He said it would impress you. He also said he’d put money into my bank account to cover the date, but now I realize he didn’t.”

I turned to the security guard. “Sir, please, may we leave so as not to disturb the other diners any further? I’ll call someone to come and pay the bill.”
Outside the restaurant, the night air was crisp and sharp. The security guard followed us, staying a few feet away to make sure we didn’t run away. I called Adam, my anger simmering.
“Jess! How was the date?”
“Adam, what on earth have you done? Stewart can’t pay the bill! It’s a huge amount of money. You said he could handle it. How could you do this to me?”
He chuckled. “Relax, Jess. I’m just trying to brighten things up. Use your card if you need to.”

“Are you kidding me? You’re coming here and fixing this mess. Right now.”
“Okay, okay. Don’t get like that. I’m coming over,” he said, still laughing.
I hung up, furious. “He’s coming. Let’s wait.”
Stewart leaned against the wall, looking sorry. “I’m so sorry, Jess. I didn’t know I’d do something like that.”
I shrugged, angry and exhausted. “It’s not your fault. My brother is an idiot.”

Adam arrived, and his smug smile made me want to scream. “Hey, guys. Any problems with the bill?”
I glared at him. “This isn’t funny at all, Adam. You’ve gone too far. Why did you set this trap for us? For your own amusement? It’s completely unacceptable.”
He made a dismissive gesture with his hand. “Okay, okay. I’ll pay. Relax.”
Adam went inside and, moments later, returned with a receipt. “That’s it. All sorted. Happy now?”
“Do you think this is a joke? You’ve humiliated me,” I snapped.
Adam shrugged. “Relax, Jess. It was just a joke. I wanted to liven things up a bit, give them an adventure.”
Stewart looked at Adam and then at me. “I’m so sorry. I had no idea.”
“It’s okay, Stewart. This isn’t your business,” I said, glaring at my brother.

We were outside the restaurant, and the night felt heavy and cold. The security guard was watching us closely. Stewart moved awkwardly. “I hope you can forgive me, Jess. I’d like to make it up to you.”
I nodded slowly. “Maybe. I just need time to think.”
Adam, still smiling, playfully punched me in the arm. “Come on, Jess. It wasn’t that bad.”
I shook my head. “You don’t understand, Adam. You’ve gone too far.”

As Adam walked away, whistling, I turned to Stewart. “I’m sorry about tonight. I wasn’t expecting any of this.”
“It’s okay,” she said softly. “I understand.”
We shared a moment of understanding, a silent acknowledgment of the disappointment we both felt. We parted ways, me betrayed by my brother. Stewart, still heartbroken, watched me leave.
“Good night, Jess,” he shouted behind me.
“Good night, Stewart,” I replied sadly.
As I walked home, I realized I needed to rethink my trust in both my brother and those around me. Adam’s antics had gone too far, and it was time to set boundaries.
