The more I spend time with dogs, the more I realize they’re nothing but love-craving, comfort-seeking babies. And, I know I’m close to the truth just by looking at Rudy.
Just seeing this sweet, well-behaved pup trotting down the New York shelter hallway in his emotional support blankie makes my heart break.
The sadness runs even deeper when I realize Rudy was about to spend his 314th night in a tiny kennel, overlooked by people. He was adopted, abandoned, and a stray dodging heavy traffic, facing countless heartbreaks in between, and yet his story is one of resilience and hope.
Why? Because Rudy is a sweetheart – a social butterfly who never stops hoping.
He’s Just A Big Baby Who Needs A Home
Before he arrived at NYC Second Chance Rescue in New York, life took a cruel turn for Rudy. He was found wandering the streets after his first family abandoned him.
Rudy’s condition was truly heartbreaking. He was emaciated, stressed out, and overstimulated by constant traffic, looking for someone to extend him a friendly hand.
“He had been found abandoned on the streets, scrawny, and overstimulated by all of the fast-paced changes happening in his young life,” his rescuers explained on Instagram.
Fortunately, his rescuers had plenty of understanding. After taking some time to decompress and start trusting again, Rudy blossomed into a wonderful shelter pup who became the epitome of the perfect snuggle buddy.
Over the next few weeks, all Rudy wanted to do was walk while being tucked in his comfy blanket and shower his caregivers with love. Even though he spent almost a year in the shelter with no applications, Rudy’s gentle temperament never faded.
Recently, the video of him walking toward the kennel on his 314th night at the NYCSCR facility broke many hearts all over the world.
No one could understand how such a sweet baby could not find a home by now.
“He’s a big baby who wants to curl up on your lap or smother you with kisses all day. He is polite, potty trained, enjoys walks and runs, carries an emotional support stuffy on his walks, and would thrive in a home outside the city,” New York shelter wrote in the video.
Rudy definitely has a lot to offer. Not only does he wear his support blankie, but he actually enjoys wearing many cute outfits – and he definitely pulls them all off!
Despite lacking interest, Rudy did eventually manage to find a foster home with a woman named Mikayla. Needless to say, he loved it!
The fact that he was finally able to run freely and sleep in a cozy bed instead of a kennel meant the world to him. Still, what he truly needed was someone ready to give him a permanent home, one where he would be loved and cherished forever.
And, after endless days of waiting for those doors to open, the moment finally came!
The Update We’ve Been Waiting For
In May 2025, NYC Second Chance Rescue posted the update everybody had been waiting for: Rudy finally found his forever home!
“Yesterday, your forever family whisked you away to your new home, complete with a big backyard with trees in full bloom, as if the world itself is celebrating this new season of your life,” NYCSCR wrote in an update post.
An amazing family who showed interest in this sweet dog after his viral Instagram video decided to meet him, and the rest was history!
Rudy and his adopters bonded right off the bat, leaving his entire team of rescuers overjoyed. After all these months, it was truly rewarding to see Rudy start a new chapter in his life – in a spacious home next to owners ready to give him everything he needed.
From now on, Rudy will be spending days taking on exciting adventures, exploring the world around him through the lens of a family dog.
That’s certainly a new experience for him, but there’s no doubt that he will embrace it with paws wide open, creating unforgettable memories along the way.
